Janet (Terry) Price (64) Wow, do I remember Walter Wood!! He knew our family well, as both my brothers, Jack and Gary were "hot rodders" from way back :-). I hardly ever got into trouble doing anything.....but......one Sunday afternoon in 1960 my oldest brother, Jack, was going out of town with some friends and told "lucky" me (with only a license that would let me drive if someone rode in the front seat with a real driver's license with me) that I could have the use of his 1958, yellow & white Ford Convertible if I paid for my own gasoline. Hey, I picked up Bonnie Nail and Linda Young (a couple of upperclassmen with driver's license) and felt like "the top of the world"! We pooled our money together and hot rodded that car all over Roby all afternoon! Little did I know that someone turned me in for driving like a bat out of "you know where"! The next day when I came home from school my mother was waiting for me with a look that could kill. Walter Wood had been there to tell my parents that their daughter had been turned in for driving too fast in town and disturbing the peace because of the loud pipes!! She was so mad at me saying it was bad enough that Walter Wood had to constantly reprimand the boys and now me too! You know, I have always respected that man for putting up with us kids during those days, but I really appreciated him for not giving me a ticket that day and caring enough to let my parents know what I had been doing. By the way, that was the last time my brother trusted me with his car. |
