I got an email from Joe Martin (Class of 63). I am adding his name to the directory and I have contact information for anyone who would like to have it. Joe was one of the few guys in that class who did not try to beat me up. You are my favorite Joe. Hopefully you will catch us all up on things....send me something I can post here. Welcome.

I have not been very good about checking my yogi email account and today when I opened I was saddened by news of loss. Two of my classmates lost their mothers in the last several days.

Allan Goforth lost his mother Inel sometime in late Feb.

Hershey Cordell lost his mother several days ago. I had an email from Hershey that I will share....Anna Rush, mother of Russell, Hershell and Karen passed away on Febvruary 29 at the ripe old age of 87. No lingering illness just decided to have a heart attack and go to be with the Lord. One of last instructions given to her by the nurse was " stop talking so much and breath more of the oxygen". She will be missed deeply by her children and all who knew her.

I am sure many people saw the obituary in the Roby and Abilene newspaper, but I wanted to let you know that my Mother, Bobbie Hardwick, passed away on January 14, 2008 at Abilene Regional Hospital. She was 82. Many people will probably remember her from when my parents ran the grocery store in Sylvester or from the 20 years that she spent as the Postmaster in Sylvester. My brothers, Wenzal and John Freeman, and my sisters, Vanessa and Melissa, and I would greatly appreciate all of your prayers in the weeks and months to come. Her death has really hit us all very hard.

Nerissa Hardwick

Sirs,
My family has a long history in Roby. My Grand-father, Maurice Young, owned and ran "Young's Food Market" from the 40's-50's and early 60's. My uncle, Bob Young was in the high school band. My Grand-Father and his wife had a big, green conestoga wagon in their yard. The house is still there; though seems to be deserted. My brother, Garry Freeman and I passed through a couple of weeks ago. Garry went to elementary school there for a while.
Was hoping someone may remember "Young's Food Market or any of my relatives. Your town still looks beautiful. So much is still there from the 50's; the store, their house w/ the old gas station next to it, movie theatre, drive in theatre, etc. Please contact me if you knew any of my relatives; Young's, Freeman's, Goss's.
Thank you.
Kurt Freeman. Dallas, Tx.

Please pass this on to anyone that would be interested or was in Barts' class if you have any of their addresses. He was in for homecoming as his class had their big class reunion!!
Such a tragedy .. from what I gathered the policeman was in a high speed pursuit when a car he was going around cut him off and he went air born and landed on these girls !!!!!!!!!!!!! the cop is okay ....but it took the life of these two innocent girls ... such a shame !!! They are Barts' GRANDAUGHTERS!

Tony Foremans niece, Kim, lost 2 of her 3 daughters in a horrible auto accident today (Friday) near St. Louis. You will see Jessica's car in the attached newcast in the photo after the police car that crossed the medium and killed she and her younger sister, Kelly, today. Tony is devastated. He was crazy about them both. They were precious girls; just beautiul, inside and out! Jessica was a college freshman living at home and working, and I think Kelly was probably a high school freshman or sophomore. They are Bart Foremans' grandaughters. He had driven to St. Louis from his home about 2-1/2 hrs. away yesterday to have Thanksgiving lunch with them, and returned to his home about 4:30 yesterday. Tony had called and talked to Kim yesterday from the Cowboy game to tell her Happy Thanksgiving.

The newscast was on KSDK.com... Sharron

John Madden was in New England to announce a football game one weekend when he noticed a special telephone near the Patriots' bench.

He asked QB Tom Brady what it was used for and was told it was a hotline to God.

John asked if he could use it.

Brady replied, ''Sure, but it will cost you $200."

John scratched his head, then thought, what the heck, I could use some help picking games. He pulled out his wallet and paid the $200. John's picks were perfect that week.

The next week, John was in Indianapolis when he noticed that same kind of phone on the Colts' bench. He asked what the telephone was for and Peyton Manning told him, "It's a hotline to God. If you want to use it, it will cost you $500."

Recalling the previous week, John pulled out his wallet and made the call. Again, John's picks were perfect that week.

Last weekend, John was in Dallas, when he noticed the same kind of telephone by the Cowboys' bench. He asked Tony Romo, "Is that the hotline to God?"

Tony Romo said, "Yes, it is and if you want to use it, it will cost you 50 cents."

John looked incredulously at Romo and said, 'Wait a second! I just paid $200 in New England and $500 in Indianapolis to use the same phone to God! Why do the Cowboys only charge 50 cents?"

Romo replied, "Because in Dallas, it's a local call!"

Welcome to God's Country!!!

I have updated contact info on the following; Joe Beauchamp (69), Sandra (Simmons) Hurst (65), Karen (Blake) Sharbutt (63) and Jana (Holcomb) Jenkins (69).

Jana (Holcomb) Jenkins graduated 1969 My cousin Jen Holcomb sent me this email address - I had fun reading and thought I might like to participate. Mainly I just enjoy reading about Roby and hearing about graduates of the past.
I just recently retired from teaching - 30 years total and am trying to find my nitch in the scheme of things as a baby boomer. Where the heck is Easy Street?
When I moved to Roby as a soph. I remember hearing your name. I don't think I ever met you but I heard all good things about you. You've done well with this website and I look forward to keeping up with any info regarding good ol Roby High. My aunt Billie Lou Holcomb and cousin Jen still live there. Also my cousin Dennis Kiker (crazy guy) my prayers are with them as Tince recoups
God is good!

Mrs. Pursley passed away. She was 94. Of course, I remember her as the "nice lady" in the lunch room. She was the manager of the Roby ISD cafeteria for thirty years until she retired. My thoughts are with Bonnie and the others in her family.
I have had to hide the email addresses on the directory page to protect us all from the spammers. However, I keep the list and will email it to you if you need it. If you are not sure if I have your current address...email me and I will compare against what I have. I currently have people looking for good addresses on Joe Beauchamp. Mail to yogi@robytexas.com

from Dennis Kiker --------I appologize in advance for putting the following information in bulk form, but it is the best way that I know to get the information out in the quickest way possible. If any of you know someone that might need to have this information and is not on the list, please pass it forward.

The dates and times are lost in the fury of Dad's illness, so please bear with me. Here are the basic facts. Dad is in Shannon Hospital in San Angelo,Texas room 418. The phone number is ***-***_**** the phone is right next to Dad's bed so any conversations so please remember will be overheard as Dad has a difficult time hearing on the phone and sometimes a difficult time talking due to medication. Mom is staying on a cot in his room almost 24 hours per day. Donnie and I are alternating staying there as much as possible.

I deleted this part of the letter as it was written to family and I am not sure that I have permission to print that part. I don't think Dennis will mind me posting the general message about his Dad who many in this audience know and respect...(yogi)

The doctor said that dad's vital signs are improving, but not stable. The medicine to reduce the stone is not working. It seems that this illness is going to be drawn out for a long while under the best circumstances. Dad's tenacity, overall health profile and the support of his family and friends have helped to bring him this far. Mom asked if Dad would be coming home soon and the doctor indicated that he would not. So, that leaves the invasive option, but only when his cardiac profile improves. Donnie is there with Mom this morning and I will be going down in a few hours. Our cousin, Gene Perry lives in San Angelo and has opened his home to us as a place to stay as needed. (He is Uncle Gene (Mom;s brother)Holcomb's son). In all of this we have seen some mighty blessings and a remarkable outpouring of love and support.

I want to thank everyone for their continued support and prayers. If any of you would like to send Dad a card or letter, Hubert Kiker, c/o Shannon Medical Center, 120 E Harris, Room #418, San Angelo, Texas, 76903

We had a good time at the fair....see photos....see you next year.

From an email to Becca from Bobbie Beauchamp September 21, 2007

I just learned that Merle Lovett was killed in an
automobile accident yesterday morning. It was a one
car roll over and not sure what the cause was. It was
told that she had just come from the clinic at the
hospital to get some medication and was on her way
back toward Roby. The accident happened at the "S"
curve by the Floyd house. If I hear anything else I
will let you know.

Good evening!

I am currently looking for anyone knowing my grandparents who raised their family in Roby. My grandfather (Benjamin Paul Harrison) was the minister of the Baptist church in Roby for several years. He passed away in 1956. My grandmother lived there until her death in April of 1965. Her name was Georgia Harrison. Her brother JP Davis owned the Silver Spur Cafe there for many years as well. JP was married to Faith who was one of the oldest living triplets at one point in time.
I know that you are young, but did you know any of these people or know of anyone who did?

My name is Georgia A. Harrison Sarakas and I go by the nickname Susie. I would appreciate any feed back you may have.

Have a great day!

I worked in Miami last week and Lee made the trip with me. Up to 80 degrees while it was in the 20s here at home. That is Miami across the bay behind Lee. We stayed over on Saturday and went up to Fort Lauderdale.

Here is a note from Tammye (Halliburton) Edwards......Just wanted to let anyone from the class of 1983 know one way or another we will have a reunion this homecoming!
Turn out the last few times has been low so lets see if we can do better this year PLEASE.

I have email address changes for Sandra (Simmons) Hurst (65) and Johnny Howard (63)

and the following from Amanda.....Amanda Moore is now Amanda Vingren. If you could change that for me,
that would be awesome. I showed this website to my students here in
Connecticut, and they couldn't believe how red the earth was. I love the
pictures because, believe it or not, it's relaxing to think of home.
Thanks for the website.

I added Michelle Romero from the class of "92" to the directory list. Welcome Michelle. If anyone would like her email address ... send me an email and I will forward it to you. Michelle says she hopes to be at homecoming.

You will notice that there are some new elements added to the site. Both from Google, they accomplish different things for Roby Texas.com. The search box can be used (as we all already know) to search the web for whatever we need or need to know. The added value is that by clicking the radio button to switch to the site mode, the Google search engine is turned on the many pages of RobyTexas.com and a name or year or phrase can be found quickly. The other element is the ad boxes. If you see anything that interests you feel free to utilize them knowing that a few pennies accrue to help offset the cost of this site.

I am currently trying to rework the site in a manner that will make it harder for the spammers and destructive types to give us all grief. It may seem slow but earning a living has to take top billing and some of this stuff is tedious. In the meantime if you will email me ...yogi@robytexas.com ... I will put up your comments on this board....I will email you any email address from the directory to help you get in touch with someone. The blog is a new tool that will stick around. I have always avoided posting too much about my life here on the message board because I wanted it to be about us all. However, the blog is a current dialog and I will feel free to talk about things that I have avoided here.

Remember, this year is homecoming and the good folks in Roby need your help to get out the word. Look back about three posts before this one and get the contact info ..... bring your information (as well as anyone else you know) current and in their hands. We only have an opportunity to do this every two years and each of those opportunities will never come again. Every place and everyone that has been a part of our lives gives us the insights that guide our lives today. Your time in Roby, short or long, has made you different and is worth remembering.

It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years since the class of 67 graduated and scattered. Dianne and I visited at Violet Upshaw’s last year and discussed hope for a 40tth reunion. Please send any information on class members, phone numbers, addresses and e-mail addresses to me and I will assemble and distribute a class roster.

Just wanted to pass this website on to the good people of Roby. It's www.rotancentennial.com This is Rotan's 100th birthday and there are several activities planned for the year.

Even though I graduated from Rotan in 1968 and I may be a little partial to Rotan I still have many good memories of Roby. Thought some of the other Fisher County residents might be interested in this centennial year and the happenings.

From the Ex Students Association Homecoming 2007 Committee - Mailing list for HOMECOMING - we need current addresses as soon as possible from as many as possible. We are attempting to update the list we have in an effort to send out a first "remember the date" type notice of Homecoming which is set for September 7-8, 2007. We need their current address and any other address info they might have, i.e.address of classmates, friends,
family. Send to Betty Joy Vaught @ bjvaught@sbcglobal.net, or Gay Nell Cherry @ gcherry@rpmh.net. We want to try to get notice out as early as possible so everyone can make plans to attend. Please ask everyone who sees this to mark their calendar for Homecoming September 7-8, 2007, and to spread the word. It's way more fun when everybody's there so, lets make this one the best ever.

Lee and I went to the Rose Bowl Parade New Year's Day. We were celebrating being married for 30 years and all that time she would get up on January 1st and watch the Pasadena fiesta and say that she would like to be there. Well we did the whole tourist thing. Stayed at a great Hilton property in North Hollywood, rode the trains and subways everywhere and were part of the largest tailgate party in the world. There are one million people arriving between midnight and 6:00am along 6 miles of Colorado Blvd. She is quite a traveler and I always find the best food.

Well that didn't last very long. Between this post and the one before...where I said we would see, I have deleted several pages of junk...offensive junk. So I am turning off the ability to post and you will just have to email me your post until I come up with a good fix.
Here are a couple of photos I lifted from the Roby paper last week.

Here are the photos from fair day 2006. Took a while.
Group includes Joyce & Donald, Gary Don & Bobbie, Sharron & Tony, Lela & Yogi and this year our grandson Luke. Yes you can bring your children or grandchildren. Remember that next year.
We banged around all day spending money and eating. ...Photo of ...........Photo of
Gary Don counts his money while Bobbie waits
Donald and Joyce are shocked by what happens next. Marilyn is nice enough to have her photo made with Tony and Gary Don only to have them act like Roby boys....first Gary Don and then Tony.
While those of us with any decorum at all are trying to recover from the embarrasment ... Sharron and Lela chase down Shawn Bradley and will not go away until he has his picture made with them.
Tony and Joyce are stunned.
Lee and Luke are always saying take our picture
Sharron says "take my picture"
Late in the day, when the shadows are long, they send me to negoiate with the "Flip a Chick" booth. I am supposed to get us a deal because "we're from Roby".
Having bought a gaggle of rubber chickens the games begin. Hammers fly ... people passing by stop to watch ... chickens miss ... some hit ... and at the end Sharron (who I think has removed chickens from each of our stacks) wins and is declared the "Big Chicken of 2006"
We had a great time and will all be there (with more money) next year.
Luke would not go in ... but stood and watched for 20 mins.

My father is in Mesa Springs nursing center is Abilene and was moved to a different wing recently. His roommate had a familiar Roby last name but I thought that there is no way this is who it is. His name is Charlie Marshall and yes, As we discovered, the same Charlie Marshall that worked for Waddell Ford for many years, then moved to Sweetwater when Jimmy Ross moved to run the dealership there. His son Charlie, was in my class and he older sisters named Linda, Shirley and Bobbie Jean. He also had two younger boys named Willie and Kervin and the latter lives in Abilene and watches over his father. Their Mom lives in the Metroplex with one of the girls.

Imagine that two men from Roby in the same room over 40 years later!! What a small world.

There is no place on earth as good as a small town/community. When help, support, love, and prayers are needed, you don't even have to ask.
I wish I still lived in Fisher County. There is no place like "home".

Larry Gruben's funeral service will be at 10 am, Thursday, First Baptist Church in Roby. I just returned from the Gruben home; Terrye and Jason, Karen & Haley are dealing well; they have had lots of friends in with food and tlc. Although I've lived here almost all my life, the love and care that the people of this community show at times like this never fails to amaze me.

Larry Gruben graduated in 1971 or 1972 from Rotan. He has 2 brothers, Harold and Wayne (Wayne and I graduated in 1968) and one sister, Regina. His mom also survives.
I'm thinking the parents ran the motel in Roby for a while after 1968, but I could be wrong.

I haven't seen a response to the comment about the sno cone stand owner... It was Mrs Paske... Sherry Paske s grandmother. Sherry graduated in about '74 or so. Well actually the lady that didn't see good wasn't Mrs. Paske.. Was her name Mrs. Campbell? then when she got too feeble, Mrs. Paske ran it till it closed.
Oh how I loved a hot dog from the blue store. Weren't those the good old days? Then when we got in high school, some of us would run to the Hatahoe to eat dinner ... that was a long way ... I guess that's one reason we had a good track and basketball team !!

Rhonda, I'm sure Yogi will post the group photo from "Roby Day," at the State Fair. While I can't speak for everyone, I can tell you Donald (Kiker) and I are still talking about it, and what a blast we had. Those attending were Gary Don and Bobbie Smith, Sharron (Kiker) Davis and Tony Foreman, Yogi and Lee, and Donald and me. The weather was absolutely pristine, and totally perfect for the Fair. Sharron won the chicken flip. I said she must have thought she was back in the gym with a basketball in her hands. Those rubber chickens didn't stand a chance; she really drew a crowd. Too much fried everything to eat and incredible fun and fellowship. Donald and I can't remember when we laughed as much as we did that day. Sorry you couldn't have all been there. Start planning now for next year!

Normally Lee and I meet a group at 12:00 noon at Big Tex and we normally go till about 10:00 or till we run out of money. You can come and go according to your schedule but normally the Big Chicken contest is the last thing we do.
No matter what year you represent we would love to have you join us, it is sort of walk around all day, eat and talk.

This is how I remember the Blue Store. I pulled a night-time heist of it as a youngster (sometime in the late 50's) filling up my Grit paper route bag with goodies. The haul was discovered by my parents and, among other punishment, I had to take it all back to Mr. Moffett and beg forgiveness. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. A lesson learned.

RE: Revis's mention dated Aug. 13 of Waco being one of the worst 4 cities in Tx. I totally agree and I lived there for almost 20 years. I am now in Gatesville (a smaller town about 40 miles away) and hate to go into Waco for anything. But we have to as hubby and I are very active in the Shriners and Masons. Meetings and activties almost every week of the month (we love that part!!!).

Would love to hear from any of the wonderful people from and who still live in Roby. My family was there in the school year of 1961-1962. My brother, Jim, and I were in the 6th grade (graduated in 68) and my older brother, Joe, was a freshman (graduated in 65). We ended up in good old Rotan (another fantastic place).

Also, if Coach and Mrs. Pruitt are still there, you have a great couple. I worked them at the Murray Prison here in Gatesville. Such a neat, fun, sincere couple.

I just wanted to let you folks in Roby know that we here in Baird had one of your own as a coach last year. Now he is moving back to Roby to coach. It is our loss and your gain!! Coach Billy Floyd was a wonderful coach here and all the kids loved him. My son played football for him and coach Bryan Webb here in Baird. He also coached my son in basketball. We will really miss him.
But congrats to you in Roby! He is one of the fairest coaches I have seen and really cares for his team.
My parents and I moved to Roby when I was two and I finished school there in 1983. Some of you will know me and my parents, My Dad was the Church of Christ minister there all that time. his name is Wardell Halliburton.
When I come back to Roby I still feel at home there it seems it never changes.
Anyway back to your coach! I guess we will see you on a Friday night on the football field this year. Although I am considered a "Momma Bear" now I will always remember that I was first a Roby Lion faithful to the Black & Scarlet. Good luck to all the boys playing football this year and God be with all of them so that not one of them gets hurt in any Friday night game.

Hi,
I found your Roby, Texas website and email address online the other day. Sounds like a great little town, especially as you said growing up and going to school there. How's this for exciting news! The Jefferson Krewe of Hebe had a meeting last Friday night. This was the meeting where we all at Mardis Gras King Cake & Mardi Gras Queen Cake. Donald Kiker (Class of '65) found the baby in his piece of cake and is therefore the official Krewe of Hebe - Mardi Gras Upriver King for 2007!

The Queen's name is Amber.

I'm going to try and attach the photo which appeard in this week's Jefferson Jimblecute (our local paper).

The official coronation will be February 3, 2007 at the formal Krewe of Hebe Mad Ball, and his reign will be for one full year until the next Ball. There will be three parades Mardi Gras week-end in which he will appear to throw Mardi Gras beads to his loyal (?) subjects.

Thought you might add this to the Roby site for me. Y'all try and come down and join the fun/festivities.

Our best to each of you. We're back and forth to the Metroplex a couple of times a month, and speak of the two of you everytime we fly through (around) Rockwall. Some things NEVER change, and Donald hasn't learned to drive any more sedately than he did in High School.

She looks too young to retire (now she need to compliment me) and I am sure that she will have time now to post some information up here on the site about the day to day life in Roby. Several folks that live waaaay off have asked if we could do some of that here. Dallas / Fort Worth seems just as far away from Roby as Atlanta or Cleveland. Betty Joy or some of you that still live in Fisher or Nolan county ... let us know about things. I saw you got a new Athletic Director ... are you going to have a team this year?Without the Lakey girls, what about the basketball team? I never thought I would ask, but .... hows the cotton crop?Let us hear from you.

The board is giving me problems again....if you will email me your comment I will post them for you until I work out the latest glitch.......yogi

Some times I remember things that are so small and yet give me great comfort. We live in a great country and we were all raised in a good place.....
one late afternoon between 1961 & 1964 I was in the truckstop parking lot. Sitting outside my car on the hood ..not wasting gas ( 21 cents a gallon). There were several of us (choose three from the list of Tony Foreman, Hershey Cordell, Bob Waddell, John Barry Hughey, Donnie Daniels, Gary Don Smith, Gary West, Jerry Neighbors or Horace Mallard). As we sat discussing how the world at large worked we noticed a family stop along the highway opposite where we were. The two adults and two children got out of the car and were looking into the cotton field they were parked beside. We strained to see what they were looking at when three of them huddled up and the fourth took a photograph. It was then that we realized that the object of their attention was the cotton.
We laughed quietly (we were polite) but got louder after they got in their car and left. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT A PICTURE OF THEMSELVES WITH A FIELD OF COTTON?
fast forward 30 years....
I have been to a wheel plant in Monet, AR and am on my way to Jonesboro, the home office of a company I do business with...I need gas and pull into a small gas station across from a rice field. When I stop I notice two guys in lawn chairs in the bed of a pickup and two others in lawn chairs just off the tailgate. Young guys still in their teens ..... watching a family across the road document their discovery of how they grow rice in the delta land.
Looking back at the guys a wave of nostalgia sweeps over me as I think..."I know exactly what you are thinking........"
We share lots of things as a country, both good and bad. This week I choose to celebrate the good....the good from the past and the good that is to come.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

Yes Yogi, Christiansburg is a neat little city. It is next door to Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech so there are lots of nice things in both cities.

No I do not live in Christiansburg, but about 40 miles due west of it, on a mountain top in Lindside, West Virginia.

There is a mountain called Peters Mountain (part of the Appalachain Mts.) which is the dividing line between VA & WV and I live on it.

The county in which I live is Monroe County, reputed to be the only county east of the Mississippi which has no stop light or fast food restraunts.

It is deemed to be a rolling picture post card, as every hill you top and every curve you round you come up on a more beautiful scene or view.

The county is a farming county, with cattle and milk production being among the largest income items.

I have been here for eleven years and wonder what took me so long to get here. As they say, "it is almost heaven."

Ginger, did a google search on Christiansburg to make some ugly comment and was pretty impressed. It looks like a neat little town. Is that where you live? http://www.christiansburg.org/photos.htm

Saw a bumper sticker in Christiansburg, Virginia last week:
SOME TOWN IN TEXAS HAS LOST THEIR VILLAGE IDIOT,

I am hoping they are not from Roby
