Happy 90th to Marie McCain. What
memories came flooding back when I read the posting from Betty Joy. And Cynthia,
we're holding you to that date in the Fall for Homecoming. Are Donald and I
the only ones who remember this will be our 40th (UGH!) year since graduation?
Come on Class of '65. . .let's get together!

I used to live in Sylvester in the late 50's. I remember a few names
when I attended McCaulley schools. My teacher first/second grade teacher was Mrs.
Woods. Mr. Greene was the superintendent. I have since learned that McCaulley
consolidated with Roby. I remember the Kellys, the Douglasses, the Mayberrys and
the Terrys in Sylvester. I also know that there are quite a few Terrys in Roby.
My family rented a farmhouse (south of Sylvester)from the Douglasses. There was
a Debbie Douglass that was in the same grade with my twin brother and me. I also
remember Ray Douglass. I think we had the same birthday (10/02/52).My family moved
to Sweetwater and I graduated in 1971. I used to haul alot of hay around Roby
and Sylvester for a man named A.J. Price. Jay Waddell and Charley Marshall also
graduated with me. Larry Smith

My Daughter Vickie Rosson from Denton, Texas came to visit us for Thanksgiving.
She showed me a picture that was on a pecan Praliene that she had bought(said
it was really good) at Piggly wiggly. It is a picture of my Uncle Joe, and Aunt
Lizzie McCormick. My Grandfather was Luther Elonzo McCormick, Uncle Joe's brother.
My Mother was Alene McCormick Reeves. As a child we lived around Claytonville, and
went to school at Sweetwater, Texas. We had a lot of relatives that lived at Roby,
and we would do some shopping there. One of my fondest memories as a child was
at Roby at Christmas time. They had real raindeer hitched to a sleigh with Santa
in it. They threw candy out to us. My cousin J.D. McCormick helped in that I think,
or he saw to it we got some candy. It was really cold as I remember, but was to
excited to feel it. I got my first machine hair permanent there. I think that
is what they called it back then, I know it weighted my head down, and burned
real bad. I saw my first picture show in Roby. Jack and Larue Reeves was my Aunt
and Uncle (Larue is my Mother's sister). They lived in Roby for a lot of years.
Their Daughter Glenda Kay graduated from school there. Wayne, Emma Lou, Doris
Jean,Alton Ray, Betty Marie, Jerry Don, and Glenda are their children, and my
cousins.I don't know all the folks that is mentioned in the Roby news, but enjoyed
reading about them. Altho, I live in Farmington, NM, I call Abilene home. My husband
is from Snyder. Sincerely Virginia (Gin) Laurens

Just an update on some folks you might be interested in. Valene Kiker
has made major improvements in the past week. Her attitude is up there and that
is very important for recovery, she is walking with a walker .. going to physical
therapy 3 times a day and eating in the cafeteria now. Helen Noles is still in
rehab at Hendricks also, they had a scare when Roy recently fell and broke his
hip and the Dr.s thought he had a stroke following his surgery, but they have
decided that it wasn't a stroke and Roy has made a dramatic come back and is feeding
himself now and just a few days ago put him in a pace maker and he is doing better
each day. He is in Hendricks Hospital and getting better. They may release Valene
to go home on Friday of this week. Thanks for all your thoughts notes and calls

a couple of hundred dollars in food and beverage. About 8:00 a storm rolled thru

Here is a message I got from Michell Terry today .... if it's about
Roby its OK
Yogi just wanted to drop you a note to let you know about a new Roby business.
I didnt know if it would be considered spam if I told you about it on the message
board! :>) Jennifer Spencer of Roby started making candles in her garage a little
over a year ago. She first sold to businesses in and around Roby but has now moved
to her own website. I wanted to add this to your classified ads for her. You should
really check out this site anyone who is a candle lover will fall in love with
her candles. Not only are they the most beautiful candles I have ever seen but
she puts more scent than the average retail candle. I burn one in my classroom
everyday and people will come in from the hallways asking what smells so good.
In a time when there are so few businesses in Roby I just wanted to spread the
word might help the economy a little! Plus there might be a few people around
who remember Hatahoes delicious Cherry Limeades and want to recall them with a
Lindas Cherry Limeade candle! www.brandedcandlecompany.com

The news I heard about Helen: She and her husband ran a store in Florida
and slept there the night Helen died. Last account I had her husband was in critical
condition from the same carbon monoxide poisoning caused from the generator. So
very sad. Helen was a classmate from 1964, a very sweet girl. I understand that
they have 2 daughters. Last word on JoAnn Terry: She is supposed to get to go
home today (Saturday) and continue her recovery in Abilene. They think that the
surgery was successful. Our prayers go up for JoAnn, Mike and family.

Hey got on here today to catch up and see what was going on ... so
sorry to hear about Joann . hoping them the very best with the surgery and chemo.
I was hoping that was all behind her !! And about Gene .. well he is doing pretty
good, he has quit smoking, he isn't able to work like he was of course but he
is making it!! He really appreciated everyones prayers and thoughts and the people
that helped cook and came and donated at the benefit they had for him to help
him with medical expenses. Lots of good people in Roby .. they don't do those
things for ya in big towns huh?? Shannon Neighbors Morrow and husband John have
had their 2nd baby. He was born on Aug 24th.. another boy and his name is BO BUSTER
MORROW ..they are doing good and she will be soon returning to her job with Forest
Pharmeceutical Co. and John is coaching at Canyon. That is where they live now
after living in Mertzon for the past several years. They are hoping to get back
closer to home asap ...missing family ties !! And my daughter Stephanee got remarried
June 25th in Weatherford Tx. at the Chandor Gardens .. if you get a chance go
walk thru it .. it is beautiful but there is also a beautiful garden in Mineral
Wells that we found also and they are phenomenal places. Both were just passions
for flowers and plants and water .. and I guess it got out of hand !! ha ha Any
way Stephanee, gradson Britton and new husband Shawn Liming have moved to Guthrie
Tx. to the Pitchfork Ranch where Shawn is over the horse program there. Becky
our baby gal .. well 25 .. She and Calan are in Henrietta and their baby is due
Oct. 25th!! Another boy ! Buster?? well we can't get him married !! He has had
plenty offers ... ha but hasn't taken the big steps yet !! Ranching in Palestine
on the Lipsey Ranch!! We just got a bunch of cowpokers in our family ... !!imagine
that !! Fall is upon us .. still no water in the lake !! and yes ... the commentster.
Why drive over there when we had Alfred Carey, M.E. Doyle, or Roy Parsons? Zanna
or Cecil could take care of your banking needs and you could get a great meal
at B & B Cafe, the Silver Spur, or later, the Hat-ta-ho. You couldn't find a better
pharmacist than Roy Noles or a better tasting milkshake after football practice
than at Noles Drugstore. Goforth cleaners would get your suits cleaned up and
if you just needed your regular stuff done, then go to Chandler's or Doty's laundry.
If you needed new items, drop in at Curlee's. The first car I remember was a Ford
bought from Bruce McCain and if you wanted to eat late, you went to the Roby Truck
Stop or the 66 Truck Stop. I know Jimmy Price could give you a much better haircut
than anyone in Sweetwater could and although Wilkinson Clinic didn't smell the
best because of the antiseptic odor, Dr. Wilkinson always called me "pal" and
sincerely wanted to know how I was feeling. I know I have left out many places,
like Beddo's Welding, Beauchamp's, Roby Hardware; Mrs. Headstream, who used to
iron clothes and her husband sold Watkins products; being able to go to the show
and watch the Lone Ranger on Saturdays for 10 cents. I can understand what Barbara
means when she said others just can't see what we experienced growing up. It would
be nice to turn back the clock. I can't think of a better summer than when Robert
Doyle and I work for the city and had two of the best bosses in the world, John
Kiker and J.B. Hughey, to work for. I'd give almost anything to be able to go
to the Blue store for some candy, get a snow cone from the Paske's, or take my
grandson to see Jake Feagan as Santa Claus; life doesn't get much better than
that. So I guess Roby is becoming like many other small towns, becoming smaller
and smaller. People don't think much about driving 25 miles for groceries or gas.
But all of us will remember Roby for what it is, was, and forever will be...the
best place in all the world to grow up in.

I have just finished reading the article about Roby in the Sept. issue
of Texas Monthly. I was drawn to the pictures of parts of Roby today as I remembered
the Roby of the 50's & early 60's. When I was in Roby for a funeral a little over
a year ago I drove around with my family to show them where I had lived and gone
to high school. I tried to show them Roby thru my eyes as a teenager. I don't
think they got it. They only know Roby is a special place to me. I remember riding
(and mostly walking) around town with Nelda, Shirley, Barbara Jane, and Ginger.
And going to the drugstore for ham sandwiches at lunch. And my daily walk to the
post office hoping for a letter from my boyfriend at the time who was in the Navy.
And Mrs. Huey who made sure I passed the algebra I needed to graduate. Bless her!
And the only time I skipped school for a girls trip to Sweetwater. We didn't get
caught but we should have. When folks read the Texas Monthly article they will
see that Roby was once a thriving little town but I-20 and other factors have
taken away many of the people and busineses. But no matter how small Roby becomes
it lives on in the hearts of those, like myself, who know what a special place
it is.

I was wondering about Gene also. I haven't heard anything since the
Bee's got after him. I hope he is doing well and look forward to someone posting
an update...
I need to fess-up..... last Saturday in Albuquerque, while wondering around "Old-Town"
with my grandson, I was called on to rescue some Nuns from a burning building
(I am pretty sure that is how it went)and I broke my leg. University Medical Center
in Albuquerque is the only Level I Trauma Center in the state of New Mexico and
they do great work. An 11" x 2" stainless steel plate - about 22 screws and 48
staples and I will be able to balance a SUV on my lap..... in about 8 weeks.
So, the moral to this story is...... when your kids try to move out of state....
your response should be "what are you trying to do? Kill me?

of my day for the last few months. I will try to do better.
Lets start with a photo that Don McCormick sent me of the Roby Truck Stop. What
a great photo ...... if you will look ... "that new car is a 59 Chevy.... TRUCK
STOP .... also over in the right of the photo ... WHAT costs 4 cents??
Don has also sent me a couple of great peanut patties. He and his family is carrying
on the tradition of Mr. Mc'S Peanut Co. I will give you and review and
tell you where you can get some of these "McCormick Family - Roby, Texas" treats
in a restaurant near you .... next time.

I am surprised to see that there is no mention that Monty Pope passed
away on July 25th. His graveside service was in Roby on the 27th. He was a fun
loving kid whose candle was snuffed out too quickly. My sincere sympathies to
Mary Jo and his daughters.

In June, my sister, Connie Beck, and I spent twelve days in South America:
Rio de Janerio, Brazil, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Iguassu Falls, Brazil. This
was the nineteenth summer trip that we have taken. Since the seasons are reversed
in South America, we really enjoyed the cool winter weather and beautiful scenery.

I just read the note from Sandy about Billy and Carol Simmon's 43rd
anniversary. Congratulations Cuz's. It seems like ya'll got hitched the day before
yesterday. My how time fly's. I never doubted the longevity of my Aunt and Uncle's
relationship, 63 years and counting, but I can imagine that they would liked to
have divorced Billy Dean several times in the past for all those rattlesnakes
he used to keep in their basement. I remember it well. Thanks for the info Sandy,
it's good to hear such success stories.

Just read the article about Connie Beck. As my girls would say - you
go, girl! Went to the link at Roby schools and saw several cousins pictures posted.
I missed the Stuart-Terry-Moore reunion this weekend. On the cheerleader page,
it reminded me of the days when we had only 3 cheerleaders and begged to have
1 more....my Sr. year we did have 4. Fun memories. I do see Louise Kiesling Moerbe
every once around town. She was our Home-Ec teacher and cheerleader sponsor back
in 1974-1976 and has taught school at Uvalde for many years.

My husband, James Harvey, and I were attending his Sweetwater High
School Reunion, Class of 56, in Albany recently. The Class of 56 graduates & spouses
met for visiting, attending the Fandangle Parade, eating barbeque on the courthouse
lawn and enjoying the open air program. While perusing the Program before the
show, I kept seeing Lynda Heatly's name. She was described as one of the "creative
talents behind the show, constructing the large and small props, serving as Assistant
to the Directors, etc, etc.... She has been an elementary teacher for more than
40 years & she and her husband Johnny have two children & two grandsons." What
a neat way to find about our own Lynda Killingsworth Heatly's service to her community.
(Lynda graduated from Roby in 1958.) Also, by the way, Lynda uses the best Optometrist
in Abilene. This happens to be my daughter, Dr. Cameo Harvey. I dropped by Cameo's
office about 8 years ago & Lynda was leaving the waiting room after her Optometrist's
visit. Boy, she was really surprised when she found out that Dr. Harvey was my
daughter. She had been driving from Albany to Abilene for two years for this wonderful
doctor she had found. It's a small world. Jane Ammons Harvey, Class of 57

Just to let some of you that might know Gene Shipp husband of late
Buelene Kiker Shipp ... Gene was stung around 200 times by Africanized Honey Bee
s last week behind the old Mccormick house as he was shredding grass/weeds. He
apparantly bumped a tree trunk that set them off ..and they believe they are in
the walls of that long time vacant house.. they swarmed Gene while he was on the
tractor and he jumped off and ran to the bar ditch where water was standing from
a recent rain ...rolliing in the water and dirt trying to escape them ..but i
have read..and you don't escape these men and viscious bees ..Murray Simmons saw
what was happening and dialed 911 ... I understand that Cullen Terry saw Gene
and drove up and hollered for him to get in ..and they followed Gene and got in
the pick up and they even stung Cullen about 40 times... Cullen and Gene met the
ambulance about the Silver Spur and they took Gene to hosp and gave him an injection
for the stings... Gene is highly allergic to the stings... they stabilized him
and air lifted him to abilene... when Gene got to hendricks.. He was having a
heart attack ... the Dr. said he had never seen in 20 yrs of practise 2 arteries
block at the same time ... either from the stings or the shot of epeniphrene that
was given for the stings... but they put him immediately into surger ..and did
3 stints ..things looking pretty good ... then that night ... had another heart
attack from 2 more blockages..and back into surgery for 4 more hrs..and repaired
a stint and added another one !! Gene as of today has been in ccu for 6 days in
Hendricks, but this evening they are preparing to move him into room 3619. the
stings are enough to kill a person especially allergic to the stings... much less
to have a heart attack too ...!!! The bees even entered his mouth I suppose as
he ran to safety.. and they stung him as he ingested them. So if you need some
imformation on the bees and what to do for safety... key in africanized bees and
there are articles to read. They look just like a regular honey bee...but the
swarm is so much more aggressive and can kill you even animals too .

SECTION: Business; Pg. 5D
HEADLINE: SouthTrust appoints executive for Atlanta
BYLINE: WALTER WOODS
SouthTrust Corp. has coaxed a former Bank of America executive out of retirement
to be its new CEO for the Atlanta market. Connie Beck, who ran Bank of America's
$32 billion private banking business on the West Coast until 2001, will move into
SouthTrust's new building overlooking the I-75/85 connector on Monday.
"Connie Beck is a proven executive who will do an excellent job of leading SouthTrust's
growth efforts in metropolitan Atlanta," said Wallace Malone, SouthTrust's chairman
and CEO. "She will be an extraordinary leader not just at SouthTrust but also
in the metro Atlanta community." Beck's appointment comes amid the Birmingham
bank's campaign to win market share here. It's currently No. 4 among competing
banks in the area, a spokesman said. SouthTrust plans new local branches --- 10
this year and 10 in 2005 --- and has moved its corporate banking unit, general
banking division, and other operations to Atlanta.
Atlanta "is a hugely important market for SouthTrust," Beck said. "There is momentum
in this company, and a great amount of our energy will be concentrated on Atlanta."

I would like to add to the post about Lonnie Green. It is always sad
to lose someone so young but a testament to how much Lonnie was liked by his peers
was the turnout for his memorial service. The Ag Barn in McCaulley was overflowing
with people. Out of 35 classmates there were close to 30 that attended the service.
A couple that were unable to attend are serving overseas and one was a foreign
exchange student back in Denmark. His classmates did an awesome job getting everything
together. It was such a nice service with people exchanging stories of Lonnie.
There were pictures on display highlighting him at different ages. It was a celebration
of his life which made me proud to have had a small part (I taught Lonnie in High

this. Fenton sent me this email.

Since I retired in 1999, I have been finding and visiting people from
the past both from Roby, school, and kinfolks. One person I was trying to find
was Linda Young. I am very heartbroken to know she passed away and I didn't get
to meet her since I last saw her in 1960. I will continue to find old friends
and relatives in the future. My symphathy goes out to the family of the Young's.

Online friends lose 'Plain Bill' to lung cancer By Reporter-News Staff
Writer January 24, 2004 Bill McCright, known to his online friends and family
as "Plain Bill," died of lung cancer Thursday. McCright, who was treated for the
disease last year, was featured in a story in the Abilene Reporter-News Jan. 11.
He had decided not to undergo chemotherapy. He shared his love of country music
through the Internet, using chat programs to inform his friends of his favorite
artists and songs. McCright made many friends online, including Bunny and Dave
Braunig of Paris, Ky. The Braunig family traveled to Clyde earlier this month
to visit McCright. "It is with a sad and heavy heart that I write to tell you
that our NOT Plain Bill crossed the river of life yesterday morning," Bunny Braunig
wrote in an e-mail Friday. "He died peacefully in his sleep." The Braunigs had
a post office box set up for McCright so well-wishers could send him cards and
jokes. Before his death, he had received more than 30 cards from around the world.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roby Cemetery in Roby. The family asks
that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or Hendrick Hospice. URL:

It is sad when I realize that more times than not, the only reason
my thoughts return to Roby is when someone who had a direct impact on my life
passes on. That is the time when I call old friends and find out details about
funerals, various people's medical conditions, and who was at homecoming. Then,
we talk about our own families and how they are and what they are doing. We say
goodbye, and promise to "call more often". And we mean it. But we get busy. We
honestly DO get busy. It would be nice to be able to "come home" more often. Maybe
next year....

Yogi, Thanks for keeping this up. I look in every once in a while to
check on what is going on. I heard about Linda yesterday and did a trip back down
memory lane a couple of times. She was, indeed, a very special lady. Week before
last was the last time I got to visit with her by phone. She was still continuing
to live each day as it came. I have admired her through her years of suffering
and teaching us all about living through trials!

Mr. McHaney's funeral is Thursday, 2 pm at First Baptist in Roby. If
you desire to send a card, Mrs. McHaney's address is 312 HWY 70 S, Roby TX 79543.
Something you may not have known about Mr. McHaney is that he was a tank commander
under Gen. George Patton. I wish that I could have talked to him about that experience.

Well I am not sure about the story about Linda's cause of death. I
have gotten information from another that was different from the first. I am sorry
if I gave any wrong information on the cause. But I do know that Linda was a very
loved, sweet, beautiful lady and had fought a courageous battle and it is a very
heartbreaking loss.

Hi Becca! I just heard that Linda Moore died last night, complications of gall
bladder surgery that she had a week or so ago. She had gone back to work, but
had some problems yesterday. Glen said that Joe Moore called him a little while
ago and was pretty upset. They took her to surgery but lost her. THIS IS A NOTE

Sad news to report. Mr. Herbert McHaney, long-time math teacher, passed
away Sunday night about 11 pm. He had complained about his heart and was taken
to Fisher County Hospital then transferred to Abilene. He was found in the bathroom
of his hospital room. I don't know about the arrangements at this time but will
post when information is known as well as Mrs. McHaney's address for cards.
